When Japanese Figure Shops Charge Your Card: 2026 Guide

When AmiAmi, HLJ, Good Smile, Premium Bandai USA and Kotobukiya US charge a pre-order, what happens if the card fails, and how to keep it from bouncing.

If you pre-ordered a figure from Japan and your card has not been charged, nothing is wrong: most Japanese shops bill months later, when the item physically exists. The catch is what happens on that day. HobbyLink Japan charges the card on file automatically and, if the charge fails, gives you seven days before it cancels every open order and disables the account. AmiAmi emails an invoice with a seven-day deadline in Japan time, and an unpaid invoice means the order is canceled and those items can no longer be re-ordered.

That is a different rhythm from a US store that takes the money at checkout, and it catches buyers whose card expired, was reissued after fraud, or lacks the 3-D Secure check that AmiAmi and Good Smile now require. This guide covers when seven shops charge, what the charge looks like on a statement, which shop suits which buyer, and how to keep a card working a year after you clicked “pre-order.” Every policy comes from the shop’s own help center or terms page, read on September 10, 2026.

Why “charged at checkout” is the exception in Japan

The Japanese retail norm is to settle at shipment. Kotobukiya’s Japanese online shop — domestic-only, but a clean example — charges when the box ships, re-verifies the card about every 20 days on pre-orders in the meantime, and refuses debit and prepaid cards because each check can pull real money from an instant-debit card. A card that fails a check and is not fixed by the stated date sees the order switched to cash on delivery with a ¥330 (about $2) fee.

The export-facing shops inherit that logic with their own twists: HLJ turned it into automatic billing, AmiAmi into a manual invoice, Good Smile into a charge on the day the shipping-date notice goes out. The US-run storefronts, Premium Bandai USA and Kotobukiya US, behave more like American retail, and the two proxy services charge in two stages. Pre-order 101 covers the broad strokes; this is the fine print that decides whether the figure ships.

Charge timing compared: seven shops, one table

Sorted from “pay when it exists” to “pay now.”

Shop Charged when Methods for US buyers Cancel a pre-order? If payment fails Billed in
AmiAmi Invoice email once every item in the order is in the warehouse; pay within 7 days (JST) PayPal; Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, Diners with 3-D Secure 2; UnionPay. Debit “not recommended,” prepaid refused; new buyers may be told to use PayPal Request only, before release and before the invoice; not guaranteed Unpaid at the deadline: order canceled, items can’t be re-ordered JPY only
HobbyLink Japan Automatically when the item arrives in stock (one billing run every 24 hours); shipping charged when you build a shipment Reach (cards, PayPal and more) or a PayPal Billing Agreement; no PayPal Credit, checks or bank transfer Yes, until the per-item deadline on the listing; never once paid and in the Private Warehouse 7-day grace, then all open and unpaid orders canceled and the account disabled until you contact them Your chosen currency or yen; the yen price is fixed
Good Smile Online Store The day the shipping-date notice is emailed, which product pages describe as 2–3 weeks before the confirmed shipping date; high-value pre-orders at checkout Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, Diners with 3-D Secure 2; PayPal. No debit or prepaid “May not be possible depending on the product”; no quantity or payment changes Error email, 7 days from the first notice to update the card, auto-retry, then cancellation USD outside Japan and Taiwan
Premium Bandai USA Card authorized at checkout, captured no later than dispatch (Global-e rule); PayPal and e-wallets likely charged at once Whatever Global-e shows at checkout (credit and debit cards); no method change after ordering Yes, from My Page until PRE-ORDERS CLOSE; in-stock items until shipped “Order pending settlement” email, fix by the stated deadline or the order is canceled for good USD (other currencies at checkout)
Kotobukiya US Online At order confirmation, pre-order or not Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover, Diners; debit OK; Shop Pay, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Amazon Pay Only within 24 hours of order confirmation An extra invoice (tariff surcharge, address change) unpaid by its deadline holds or cancels the order USD; US only
Buyee (proxy) Item price plus ¥500 (about $3) fee the moment you order; shipping billed after warehouse arrival Visa, Mastercard, JCB, UnionPay; PayPal; Alipay No, as a rule; a Cancel button appears only on orders needing manual handling — (paid up front) Your card’s home currency, USD fallback
ZenMarket (proxy) Deposit first; item quote paid from balance, shipping billed after packing Credit or debit card via Stripe, PayPal, bank transfer, Wise, crypto Pre-purchase rule not published; ¥1,000 (about $7) per item after arrival if the seller takes returns — (prepaid); unused funds withdrawable for 180 days Yen balance

Good Smile’s US store (goodsmileus.com) is a separate operation whose help center does not say whether it charges at order or at shipment, so it stays out of the table. It does say a pre-order can be canceled until its window closes, and a declined card puts the order on hold with 14 business days to fix it.

What each charge looks like on your statement

AmiAmi. Nothing happens until every item in the order has arrived. Then a “Payment Request” email lands with a link, which also sits in the Orders Awaiting Payment section of My Account. You have seven days from that first invoice, counted in Japan Standard Time, and AmiAmi says deadlines may not be extended for PayPal or banking problems. Card payments go through the 3-D Secure 2 check; PayPal converts to yen, because anything sent in another currency is refunded.

HobbyLink Japan. There is no payment page. When your item is checked into stock, the order enters payment processing and the method on your account is billed in the next 24-hour cycle. Pay through Reach and the statement line may not say HLJ: the help center lists Reach, RCH, CKO WithReach, Calforex and GoInterpay as descriptors, and Reach is a Calgary company. You are billed in the currency you picked on the Payment Method page at Reach’s rate on the day, with the yen price locked from the order. Merchandise is charged when it arrives in stock and is then parked in your Private Warehouse; shipping is a separate charge when you build the box (our HLJ vs AmiAmi comparison covers that side).

Good Smile Online Store. Each pre-order item gets its own order number and ships on its own schedule, so each is charged separately, on the day the shipping-date email is sent. Before that, the order shows as “Incomplete” and a verification charge may appear and vanish. Above an unstated price threshold the store charges at checkout instead. Accounts outside Japan and Taiwan pay in US dollars.

Premium Bandai USA. You are buying from Global-e, the merchant of record, and the statement reads “Global-e” plus the store name. Global-e’s terms say a card is authorized at order and captured at the latest when the product ships, PayPal and other wallets are likely charged immediately, and the full amount is charged even for pre-orders. Whether the store captures a pre-order right away or holds the authorization is not stated by Bandai; treat the money as committed at checkout. Bandai warns that an issuer’s foreign-transaction fee may not come back if the order is canceled. Our P-Bandai and Tamashii Web guide covers the US storefront’s catalog.

Kotobukiya US Online. Charged in full at order confirmation, with a possible second invoice by email if a tariff surcharge or address change raises the cost. Cancellation is a 24-hour window from confirmation, not from release. Shipping is $10 to the mainland US and $40 to Alaska and Hawaii, and nowhere else.

Buyee and ZenMarket. Buyee charges the item price, its ¥500 purchase fee and any guarantee plan the moment you order, then bills domestic and international shipping once the item reaches its warehouse. ZenMarket asks for a deposit first; staff quote the order, you pay from the balance, and shipping is billed after packing. Deposit fees start at 1%, PayPal converts to yen, and card deposits use Stripe’s rate. Fees are compared in our Buyee vs ZenMarket guide.

Which shop fits which buyer

Several pre-orders running and you want the cash to stay put until the figure exists. HLJ or AmiAmi. Neither charges at order time or asks for prepayment except on rare high-priced or made-to-order items flagged on the listing. Prefer HLJ’s automatic charge if you sometimes miss emails; prefer AmiAmi’s manual invoice if you want to see the shipping total before paying.

Set it and forget it. HLJ with a PayPal Billing Agreement, which pre-authorizes every payment, or Premium Bandai USA and Kotobukiya US, where the money is committed at checkout. The trade-off at Kotobukiya US is a 24-hour cancellation window.

Keep the right to change your mind. HLJ shows a per-item cancellation deadline on the listing (the policy in force since October 1, 2025); Premium Bandai USA allows cancellation from My Page until PRE-ORDERS CLOSE. AmiAmi treats a cancellation as a request it can refuse, and Good Smile’s global store warns it may not be possible at all depending on the product.

Need a Japan-only item. A proxy: Buyee takes the item price now and shipping later, ZenMarket wants a deposit up front. Neither cancels a placed order as a matter of course.

Set up your card so nothing bounces

  1. Use a credit card, not debit or prepaid. Good Smile’s global store refuses both; AmiAmi refuses prepaid and says debit is not recommended. Kotobukiya US and ZenMarket accept debit, but the card registered at the Japanese shops should be credit.
  2. Confirm 3-D Secure 2 works on it. AmiAmi and Good Smile require it for every card payment. It goes by Visa Secure, Mastercard SecureCode, J/Secure and American Express SafeKey; AmiAmi noted that Diners Club’s version was not compatible with its processor when it announced the change.
  3. Check the expiry date against the release month. A figure announced now for late 2027 will not be charged for a year or more, and slips of a season are routine. If the card expires first, HLJ bills a dead card and starts its seven-day clock; Good Smile does the same on the day it sends the shipping-date notice.
  4. Update every shop when the card changes. HLJ’s payment method is account-wide, so one change on the Payment Method page covers every order. Good Smile takes the new card in My Account and retries on its own. Kotobukiya US already has the money. Premium Bandai USA does not let you change the payment method after ordering, so a card problem there means a pending-settlement email to resolve with your issuer.
  5. Pick your HLJ currency deliberately. The Payment Method page has a Select Payment Currency drop-down. Reach adds no fee of its own, but your bank may charge for a foreign-currency or cross-border transaction either way, so compare a statement line before settling on yen or dollars.
  6. Keep PayPal alive as the fallback. AmiAmi may require PayPal for a first order and points declined-card customers to PayPal; HLJ accepts a Billing Agreement; Good Smile takes PayPal on the same timing as cards but, by its own help articles, may need a support request to retry a failed PayPal charge.
  7. Make sure the shop’s email reaches you. The messages that matter are AmiAmi’s “Payment Request,” HLJ’s “Payment Problem Notice” and Premium Bandai USA’s “There is an order pending settlement.” Each carries a deadline; each shop cancels when it passes.
  8. Put AmiAmi deadlines on a calendar in JST. A Tokyo deadline falls 13 or 14 hours earlier on a New York clock and 16 or 17 hours earlier in Los Angeles, depending on daylight saving time, so paying on the last day US time can mean paying late in Japan.
  9. Never dispute a charge with your bank. HLJ’s terms say it contests every chargeback and may bar customers who file one. Email the shop first.

FAQ

Why is there a small charge from AmiAmi or Good Smile that I never made? It is a card verification, not a purchase. AmiAmi says the issuer may place a temporary charge when a card is registered or used, at an amount outside its control; Good Smile says a verification charge is placed when you choose card payment and canceled once the real settlement is confirmed.

HLJ charged me but nothing shipped. Is that right? Yes. HLJ bills the merchandise when it arrives in stock, then parks it in your Private Warehouse, where it can sit for up to 180 days; shipping is billed only when you build a shipment. An apparent double charge can be an authorization followed by the real transaction.

Can I cancel after I have been charged? Rarely. HLJ: no, once the item is paid and warehoused. AmiAmi: requests are normally refused once the invoice has gone out, and a paid order cannot be canceled. Good Smile: no changes after ordering, and a customer who cancels or refuses delivery may be refused future service. Premium Bandai USA is the exception among the pay-now stores: My Page shows a cancel button until PRE-ORDERS CLOSE, even though the money is already committed.

Which currency should I choose at HLJ? Whichever your bank processes more cheaply. The yen price is locked at order time either way; what floats is the dollar figure Reach calculates on billing day. Refunds within 60 days come back in the currency and method you paid with; after that HLJ refunds in yen via PayPal or store credit at that day’s rate.

What exactly happens if my card is declined? HLJ: a Payment Problem Notice, then seven days to fix it or contact support before all open orders are canceled and the account is disabled. Good Smile: an error email, then seven days from the first notice to update the card, after which the order is canceled with no reversal. Good Smile US: order on hold, 14 business days. Premium Bandai USA: a pending-settlement email with its own deadline, then a cancellation you cannot undo. AmiAmi: a decline just leaves the invoice unpaid; switch to another card or PayPal inside the seven days. A bill from the carrier on delivery is import duty, not the shop; see our duty and tax guide.

AmiAmi, HLJ and the Good Smile global store ship internationally from Japan; Premium Bandai USA and Kotobukiya US ship within the United States only. Duties and taxes on Japan-shipped parcels are collected on delivery unless the shop or proxy prepays them.
