Pre-Order 101: How Japanese Figure Pre-Orders Actually Work

What 一般店頭販売, 魂ウェブ商店, 初回特典 and 再販 mean, why shops close early, when you pay, when you can cancel, and why release dates move. Verified August 2026.

Every Japanese figure announcement we cover comes with the same handful of terms: a pre-order window that opens on a specific date, a “first-run” bonus, a shop that says “Order Stop” three days later, a release month that then slips. None of it is complicated once you know who is doing what. This guide explains the pre-order system from the maker’s side down to your card statement, using the actual pages of Bandai Spirits, Good Smile Company, HobbyLink Japan, AmiAmi and Kotobukiya as of August 28, 2026.

If you only read one paragraph: the maker sets the window and the bonus, the shop gets a fixed allocation and closes when it is gone, you are usually not charged until the item exists, and the date on the listing is a plan, not a promise.

Who does what: maker, distributor, shop

In broad terms, a pre-order starts with the maker deciding how many units to produce, and shops order against that number, so each shop ends up with an allocation. This is why the same figure can be “Pre-orders Closed” at one shop and open at another, and why AmiAmi says outright that it cannot accept orders beyond the quantity it expects to receive.

On Tamashii Web, Bandai Spirits’ product pages carry a label for the sales route:

The same page also shows 予約期間 (pre-order period, usually just a start date for retail items), 発売月 (release month) and 商品購入可能エリア (regions where it is sold). “USA” in that list is the signal that US retailers can carry the item.

First run, first-run bonus, rerun

Three more terms decide whether you should order on day one:

• 初回限定 / 初回特典 (first-run edition / first-run bonus). Some items come in a first production run that includes an extra part, and Bandai states on the page when later runs will not. The S.H.Figuarts Trunks (Z Warriors) listing is a clean example: the first run includes the “Z Warriors Assembly Base B,” and the page says the rerun version does not.
• 再販 (rerun). Tamashii Web tags reissued items with 再販 and lists the original release date; the Kakashi rerun page shows a first release of December 24, 2022 for an item opening for pre-order again on September 1, 2026. A rerun is the retail-price route to a sold-out figure, but read the set contents: a bonus part tied to the first run may be gone.
• 再生産 (re-production). Kotobukiya’s term for the same thing. Its Kurisu Makise page marks the 2027 run as a re-production and notes the price has changed from the first run, so do not assume a rerun costs what the original did.

Good Smile’s store handles reruns as variants on one product page. On the POP UP PARADE Lucy page, the February 2026 first run is listed as “Preorders Closed” and the February 2027 rerelease as “Preorders Open Now,” each with its own release date.

Two kinds of deadline

There are two clocks running on any pre-order, and mixing them up is the most common mistake we see.

The maker’s window. Good Smile publishes an explicit pre-order period on each product page, with a per-person limit (three on the Lucy page), and states that orders placed on its own store during that period are guaranteed to be fulfilled. Bandai’s retail items usually show only a start date, so the practical deadline is set by the shops.

The shop’s allocation. A shop can stop taking orders at any point. AmiAmi marks an item “Pre-orders Closed” when its slots are filled and says it cannot predict whether more will open. HLJ prints a per-item cancellation deadline on the listing and, when its allocation is full, the status “Order Stop”; on the Saint Cloth Series Pegasus, the cancellation deadline was August 26, 2026, one day before Bandai’s retail pre-orders started on August 27, and the listing had already moved to Order Stop by August 28.

The rule that follows: for anything with a first-run bonus or a small maker, order within the first day or two of the window at the shop you prefer, and treat the maker’s published end date, if there is one, as the last possible day rather than the plan.

When you actually pay

This surprises people coming from US retail, where a pre-order is charged immediately.

• HobbyLink Japan says it never takes prepayment for pre-orders or backorders before the items are available. You pre-order, nothing is charged, and the item is charged when it reaches HLJ’s warehouse. The exception is printed on individual listings: high-priced items such as the METAL STRUCTURE Gundam Mk-II require prepayment at order.
• AmiAmi invoices an order after every item in it is available, does not require prepayment for pre-orders unless noted (large, high-priced or made-to-order items can be), and then gives you seven days from the first invoice to pay in full. Combining orders does not extend that deadline.
• Good Smile Company store charges your card or PayPal at shipment, except for pre-orders above a certain amount, which are charged at checkout. Accounts outside Japan and Taiwan pay in US dollars.

Two practical consequences: your card has to stay valid for the whole lead time, which for a figure announced in August 2026 and shipping in spring 2027 is most of a year, and the payment request email is the one email you cannot afford to miss.

Canceling

Cancellation policy is where the shops differ most.

• HLJ describes its policy as flexible, and each listing carries a cancellation deadline; up to that date you can cancel, after it you cannot, whether or not the item was prepaid (the Pegasus listing says so, and the prepaid Mk-II listing says the same).
• AmiAmi lets you request cancellation of unreleased pre-orders from your account, but a request is not a guarantee. Cancellations are typically refused once the payment request has gone out and for back-orders, and AmiAmi warns that misuse or a large number of cancellations can lead to account restrictions.
• Good Smile store does not accept changes to quantity or payment method after checkout, and its order guide adds that even during the pre-order period a cancellation may not be possible depending on the product and the order status.

If you are not sure you want something, the least risky place to pre-order it is a pay-at-availability shop, and the least risky time to change your mind is before the payment request.

Why the date on the box moves

Release months are targets. Good Smile publishes a notice every time dates change; the August 27, 2026 notice moved ten products, including eight Miku Hug goods from August to September and Nendoroid yoshikitty from September to November, and its store guide says the release date shown at the start of a pre-order period may change without notice. Tamashii Web pages give a release month plus 発売予定 (planned).

For you this means: do not book anything around a figure’s release month, expect the payment request to follow the maker’s shipment rather than the listed month, and if a shop says a date has slipped, the shop is usually the messenger, not the cause.

Status labels you will see

FAQ

The pre-order opened this morning in Japan and my shop already says “Pre-orders Closed.” Is it sold out for good? Not necessarily. That shop’s allocation is full. Other shops may still be open, the maker may add stock, and a rerun may follow. AmiAmi says it cannot predict when or whether an item will reopen.

Will I get the first-run bonus if I order a rerun? Read the set contents on the maker page. Bandai’s Trunks page says the rerun ships without the base; the Obito rerun page still lists its bonus Naruto face plate. It varies item by item.

Do I pay when I pre-order? At HLJ and AmiAmi, no, unless the listing says prepayment is required. At the Good Smile store, no, unless the pre-order is above a certain amount. See the shop comparison guide for the full payment and cancellation table.

Can a rerun cost more than the original? Yes. Kotobukiya states on the Kurisu re-production page that the price changed from the first run.

What if the release month slips and I have moved? Update the shipping address on the order before the payment request, and for Good Smile before the shipment-date confirmation email, after which the store does not accept address changes.

Three current pre-orders that show the system

The Trunks (Z Warriors) first run is the first-run-bonus case, opening September 1 at general retail. The Saint Cloth Series Pegasus shows how a shop allocation closes: HLJ’s cancellation deadline passed before Bandai’s retail window opened, and the listing is now at Order Stop. The POP UP PARADE Lucy rerelease shows Good Smile’s model: a published window (to September 23), a per-person limit and a guaranteed slot if you order direct. All three are on the Pre-order Radar, and the Vegeta and Trunks post has the full Trunks set contents.
